We’re Pregnant!

preggersThat’s right, Baby Benica is due June 21st and our lives are about to be turned upside down! I thought it would be fun to answer a few commonly asked questions that we’ve been getting a lot about the pregnancy.

  1. When did we find out? October 11th to be exact. I was scheduled to run my first half-marathon that Sunday and, after lots of internet research, I went for it and am so glad I did!
  2. How did I tell Ben? Ben had therapy clients that night and I was going to an EP release show for a friend, so I drew him this family picture and left it on the fridge (note the stick baby in my tummy).

  3. How have I been feeling? Fantastic! I did take a lot more naps during the 1st trimester and had to switch prenatal vitamins at one point, but otherwise I’ve felt great.
  4. Are we really naming our child Benica? Benica is our celebrity name put together (Ben+Monica). Since the beginning we’ve jokingly referred to our unborn child as Baby Benica and it just kinda stuck, but no this will not be on the birth certificate.
  5. How did we tell our families? At Christmas we made my parents a photo calendar that had the ultrasound pic on the month of June and we gave Ben’s parents a decorated paper mache number 6 (since this will be their 6th grandchild). We also gave my grandma an ornament that said, “great-grandma to bee” with a bee on it.

We are very excited to begin this new adventure and relieved to finally be able to share our big news with the world!

So what does this mean for Staging by M? We live in a 1,056 sqft home with tiny closets – can you say organize, organize, organize?! I also have a nursery to decorate and lots of baby preparation in the next 6 months. I’ll go into more detail on Wednesday about my game plan, so stay tuned!

The Marriage You Never Wanted

Have you ever felt so passionate about something that you just HAD to share your message with the world? That’s how I feel about marriage and the transformations that have happened in my marriage the past few years!
Ben and I have reached a point where we just can’t keep quiet anymore. We’ve decided to launch our message, The Marriage You Never Wanted. Intrigued? We will unveil our new blog this Monday which will coincide with seminars, a living room tour, and marriage coaching. I can’t relay how excited I am about this!

What does this mean for Staging by M? Nothing. Seth Godin says the way to start something is 1. Don’t think about it. 2. Just start. 3. Keep starting. We’re simply starting something new. I will continue to blog here at Staging by M twice a week just like usual because I love doing it. More details to come…

Update: MarriageYouNeverWanted.com is live, so feel free to check it out!

New Blog vs. Old Blog

Welcome to the new and improved Staging by M blog! I’ve owned the domain stagingbym.com for awhile and decided to make the jump over. That way when you tell all your friends about this fun blog, it’s easy-peasy to remember:)

You’ll also notice a delicious chevron background I downloaded here at tinysea.net – gotta love those talented peeps that offer their goodies for free! You can also follow me via Google Friend Connect over in the right-hand column. Don’t worry, I’ll wait while you do that…

A huge thank you goes out to my BFF Bobbie who helped me with these tweaks! She has a pretty amazing blog herself about her family of four enjoying debt free living on one part-time income!

We have been crazy busy trying to simplify and improve our lives through budgeting (mint.com), diet (the Paleo Diet) and by booking a vacation! This summer we’re headed to the Riviera Maya, Mexico for our 9 yr. anniversary where it all began (that’s where we spent our honeymoon). Stay tuned for some exciting home projects I have up my sleeve too!

2011 in Review

On Jan 14th of 2011 I sat down and wrote my first blog post for Staging by M. My goal was to blog 3 times a week and to use this blog as a way to advertise my staging business. I am happy to say that I feel like I achieved that goal!My blog was viewed about 21,000 times in 2011 with 132 new posts and 744 pics uploaded. Some of my top referrers were facebook.com, theletteredcottage.net, thriftydecorchick.blogspot.com and centsationalgirl.com. I had readers from 6 continents – mostly from the US, but Canada and IE weren’t far behind.

My top 5 commenters were Merschon, Levi, Bobbie, Katie and Denise (love you guys!). My top 5 blog posts were A Shopping Secret, Decorating Above Kitchen Cabinets, Ideas for Blank Walls, Master Bedroom Paint Makeover and A Curtain Conundrum. You might want to check those out if you missed them!

I am VERY excited about where I want this blog to go in 2012! The purpose of my blog has switched from promoting my business to simply being my creative outlet to the world. I had a chance to get my “blog feet” wet this last year and feel like I learned a lot about writing a design blog.

My goal is still to blog 3 times a week (Mon-Wed-Fri). I want to seriously up my photography game and really learn how to use my fancy camera. Since we have decided to stay put in Memphis for awhile, I also want to focus on making our house a home doing as much ourselves on a budget as possible.
My next goal can best be described via this Chick-fil-A napkin that my genius hubby brainstormed on. Barb Schwarz is the creator of home staging and the Founder and CEO of StagedHomes.com which I did my training through. She is on one end of the scale whereas crazy Lady Gaga is on the other. Ben suggested that I find a happy staging/design medium to make it fun again!

Thank you all SO much for reading and for all of the encouragement I’ve received in this venture! What was your favorite blog post of 2011? What would you like to see more of in 2012? Who else doodles their best ideas on napkins?

A Breach of Contract

You may remember me mentioning a contract that Ben and I signed a year ago. It stated that on October 1st, 2011 we would not be living in Memphis. I hope the “God dealing with us ever so severely” (can you tell we were in an OT study at the time?) part doesn’t happen because we are still very much Memphians.
We found ourselves once again at Panera Saturday morning (Oct 1st) splitting our usual delicious bagel discussing our future plans. Ben even looked for another Panera comment card so we could create a new, bigger and better contract, but they were out. Was it a sign?

I forgot to mention that we met with a realtor last week and found out that we are basically in a sinking ship house. We spent most of Friday night re-watching the final season of Lost trying to determine whether or not we’re living in an alternate universe. We’re still not 100% on that.

After breakfast at Panera I did what any good wife would do and kidnapped Ben, forced him to get a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks and took him to one of our favorite parks for a walk and some fresh air. I wanted to spiral downward and talk about how horrible it is that we’re stuck in Memphis and can seemingly never leave. Instead, I listened.

My man has some seriously good ideas and insight when I just keep my mouth shut. We didn’t come to any set-in-stone conclusions, but perhaps a moving contract wasn’t the best idea. We aren’t giving up, but maybe there will be a better time and a better situation for the move. Right now, the guide posts just aren’t lining up …and somehow we’re ok with that.

Finding My Niche

Can I just say that it’s tough following up a kitchen renovation post? We still have a few projects to finish up on the house, but the big stuff is done-o. We are interviewing realtors next week and plan to put it on the market! As I tell my clients – when you decide to sell your house, it’s not your home anymore.
We were on a family walk recently discussing my blog and the direction it will go now that our house is pretty much finished. Ben asked me a great question – “What’s your niche?” I was like, “Huh?” He suggested that I look back at what I’ve naturally been blogging about the last 8 months and evaluate.

In doing so, I discovered some possibilities:

  • Being real and honest – obviously things don’t always go perfectly and I never stray away from how it really went down.
  • Staging – I started out wanting this to be a blog focused on staging with lots of before/after shots and sharing this passion of mine.
  • Life Transitions – we are homeowners, Memphians, are constantly searching for the perfect careers and we want to become home sellers, Oklahomans and parents.
  • An apple a day – this last year we’ve been trying to improve our health using cleaner products and eating better food.
  • How To’s – there is no TMI in DIY.

So what do you guys want to read more about? Any other niches that I haven’t thought of? Bonus question: what’s your favorite post up to this point?

Bringing Home The Bacon

Here I am blogging on my lunch break as I work my first 8-hr. day in over a year. The company I work part-time for asked me to fill in for a girl going on maternity leave for 6-wks and I hesitantly happily said yes. I will now be making in a week what I normally make in a month, and it’s an awesome opportunity to build up our savings for getting the house fixed up and the move.
I was, however, nervous about the commitment I made to posting 3x’s/wk on this blog. I definitely wasn’t ready to give up my blogging sea legs! Besides flossing my teeth daily, this is the longest goal I’ve stuck to and it’s been my creative outlet the past several months. Blogging brings out the artist in me that I never knew existed – it’s my canvas or instrument if you will.

Without days off during the week, I need to work on projects and prepare for posts beforehand rather than just waking up that day without a clue. So what I need is a plan – a good, solid plan. This week I’m just gonna wing it, but then I. Need. A. Plan. Any advice from you dedicated bloggers out there? How can I balance working full-time with my budding blogging career?

I Don’t Like Moving—Ben’s Perspective

I am notorious for making sure things don’t change for us: I find a job, get a state license, go through a “phase,” cause a global financial meltdown to destroy the housing market in Memphis, etc. Believe it or not, I am actually on the hook for 3 years of office rent that I got myself into after we decided to move by October of this year. Crazy, I know! I resist change like a script for a new season of 24. So, when we signed this contract together (click on the pic to enlarge), I didn’t really think we’d go through with it. Fortunately (sometimes) for me, I have a wife who believes strongly (and this is an understatement) in keeping your word.

Monica’s announcement on the blog means we’re serious. A couple of ways to increase chances of change, after all, are creating accountability and increasing the chance for humiliation upon failure. As a studier of change and experienced practitioner of thwarting change, I can tell you that the announcement has definitely put a burden on me. I’ll either be found out a politician, or I’ll be someone who keeps his word.

I am a big fan of the saying, “The more things stay the same, the more you have to change to keep them that way.” For instance, the more you want your children to remain cute little children, the more you have to treat them like cute little children, even when they are in high school. In our case, we have worked hard to keep things like we want them in Memphis, and it’s not really rational anymore, it’s only blocking change. If we don’t move, we’ll continue to be in this state of trying to make it okay, rather than making a needed change.

I have a million excuses not to move. For instance, I am scared to death of the possibility of having to rent our house. All of it is fear that something will make me uncomfortable, which is also why I need to go through with it, because, unlike Donald Trump’s hair in the last 400 years, I can change!

House Tour-Kitchen

Whoa, Nelly! Not only did I set a record of hits on my blog with my Big Announcement post, but I was getting bombarded with calls/texts from friends and family wanting to know the scoop (even my mom called). My 2-word announcement may have been a little misleading since everyone was assuming that one of us had accepted a job offer or something. Anyone who’s close to us knows that we’ve been planning to move back to Oooooklahoma for awhile now.

The 3 yrs. we were supposed to be in Memphis for Ben to attend grad school have somehow turned into 7! Our main pull back there is our familia and it being a great place to live and raise a family. Plus, Ben is tired of not getting the OU games on TV. Don’t get me wrong, we love our life and our peeps here in Memphis. We started from scratch and will be moving back to OK forever changed due to the amazing relationships that have shaped us here.

Ben finally gave in after I begged graciously offered to do a guest post on my blog tomorrow of why we’re moving from his perspective, so that should be exciting. Our goal is to be there by Oct and I’ll let Ben elaborate more on that date in his post. Now let’s get to the good stuff – holy crow, we have to get our house ready to sell/rent ASAP! This will be my ultimate challenge as a home stager. In several posts I will go through each room listing what we plan to do (click on the pics to enlarge them).
What’s this room? It’s our galley kitchen I’ve been embarrassed to show or do much with on my blog thus far. I decided to just rip the band-aid off and begin with the room that needs the most work. The ugly florescent light is one of the only light fixtures we haven’t replaced and I’m thinking a simple track light would look nice.
Here’s a shot from the other side to show you just how tiny it is. Oh the mistakes I’ve made in this kitchen, I don’t think I have enough fingers/toes to count! Let’s begin with the dark paint colors and black trim for starters – that certainly isn’t helping this space appear bright and airy. I plan on painting it a light beige on top of the chair rail, a shade or 2 darker below it, and the trim white.
Notice the “I kiss better than I cook” sign above our stove – so true! The top cabinet doors obviously need to be put back on. That microwave is basically a giant timer and needs to be donated to Goodwill and the toaster oven stored away to open up the very little counter space.
Here you can see the off white, dusty blinds that were in every window of our house when we moved in. I’d like to replace them with bamboo shades like we have in our bathroom. The pot rack needs to be taken down and the contents stored. Oh, and that makes-me-vomit-in-my-mouth-a-little fake marble green countertop needs to be replaced with a more neutral one!
This is how NOT to paint kitchen cabinets. We did this several years ago and didn’t prime them correctly OR let them dry nearly long enough. This particular cabinet door got in a fight with Ben when he was trying to rehang it… I think the door won. I would like to paint the top cabinets white and the bottom cabinets a blueish gray (similar to this kitchen).

The only thing of value we’ve done in that room is have the tile professionally installed (after a certain puppy chewed holes in the laminate floor) and it will look amazing once we’ve lightened up the rest of the room. We also go back and forth about installing a dishwasher/garbage disposal so that it’s more competitive with other houses in our neighborhood. Just for fun, here’s a pic of our kitchen when we first toured the house.
Whew, that’s A LOT of work! You know what they say though – put any money you have into kitchens and bathrooms. This will by far be the focus of our efforts of getting our house into sellable condition.

It’s funny how I was more nervous to reveal our subpar kitchen than our junk room. I guess because junk is less embarrassing to me than poor design choices. In my defense, I spend very little time in the kitchen – it’s more like a storage area where we keep all that stuff from our wedding registry. What are your thoughts/suggestions on our kitchen reno plans?
